Anyone who is interested in the biography of J.C. Bach, the youngest son of J.S. Bach, immediately encounters the name C.F. Abel. In 1763 the two bachelors moved into a shared room in the fashionable neighbourhood of Soho, London. After two years Bach and Abel presented their popular subscription concerts, included were Bach’s Sonatas for Viola da Gamba. For years the questions was always “Where are these compositions now”, and then in 1992 a previously unknown collection of manuscripts came to light, including these sonatas asnd sold to a private collector who gave Thomas Fritzsch permission to perform them. The story comes full circle with them being released on this Coviello CD.
