Nobody…can deny the myriad colours in [Fischer-Dieskau's] vocal palate. There is power when Falstaff is angry, softness in his wooing. Leonard Bernstein finds the gaiety in the music…Ilva Ligabue was the finest Alice of her generation, and one wishes that Verdi had written an aria for the character, for Ligabue's glowing soprano tones are meltingly lovely.
