December 2012
far from wearying the listener with a surfeit of sorrow, this is a very successful recital. It demonstrates nicely the other perception of Dowland's contemporaries that, paradoxically, sad music was an antidote to melancholy...That this is the effect of the disc is ensured by the high quality of the performances. Burwood has a truly beautiful voice, which he floats effortlessly above Hodgson's profoundly sympathetic accompaniment.
