About
Schreker’s Der Schmied von Gent (The Blacksmith of Ghent) is an opera full of stylistic pluralism and folk-like melodies. It is very unlike any of his previous works and his wealth of imagination and wit are simply inexhaustible. Written in the midst of a creative crisis, with two previous operas failing to please public taste at the time, he was more determined than ever to create an opera that would appeal to the masses.

Awards and reviews
July 2012
This premiere recording...boasts a strongly committed cast, with Oliver Zwarg tackling the challenging role of Smee most effectively...Undoubtedly the most impressive contribution comes from the Robert Schumann Philharmonie and Frank Beermann, who negotiate the considerable intricacies of Schreker's scoring with impressive virtuosity.
June 2012
There is some touching characterization of Smee's wife, sympathetically sung by Undine Dreissig...Smee himself is vividly portrayed by Oliver Zwarg's cheerfully vigorous singing...Frank Beerman has a secure hand on the score, and draws excellent playing from the orchestra.

this well-packaged recording is based on a production in Chemnitz two years ago. The performance is first rate, with Oliver Zwerg as the blacksmith and conductor Frank Beermann vividly bringing out the colours in Schreker's score
