About
Already established within Viennese culture by Haydn and Mozart, the trio genre was taken to new limits by the inexhaustible imagination of Beethoven's genius: "a serene joy come from an unknown world", was E. T. A. Hoffmann's reaction on hearing the Trio in D major Op.70 no.1. The Wanderers have ventured into the Beethoven piano trios and mastered every inch of its topography. What better guide could there be for us to follow with total confidence, in their 25th anniversary year?

Trio Wanderer's perspective on Beethoven is so fresh it's almost disconcerting. The prevailing impressions are of delicacy, beauty of tone and a spirited playfulness that's often eclipsed when performers go all out for high seriousness...It's the imaginative brilliance of the writing that stands out in the slow movement of the Ghost

Time and again we're reminded that this is an ensemble who have no need for point-making, either to their audience or to one another, trusting the music to make its own impact. And what an impact...Though the piano-writing in these trios is overtly virtuoso, it never threatens to overbalance the other two lines, thanks to the Wanderer's finely attuned collective ear.

I’m fairly confident that there are no better options on the market.

The eerie textures and bizarre harmonies of the Ghost trio’s famous largo assai make the music sound avant-garde, while the Archduke is a magnificent performance of spirituality and high drama. Unmissable.

This four-disc set, released to celebrate the Trio Wanderer's 25th anniversary, is of a consistently high quality, with close attention to dynamics, sensitive balance between instruments and keen rhythmic energy. Most accounts of the "Archduke" are more grandiose and romantic. Yet this lean, playful account offers a convincing and lyrical alternative.

this survey of all the Beethoven piano trios testifies to the ensemble’s communicative panache and to its confident handling of the different demands of a considerable span of music...The Wanderer brings terrific character and understanding to all this music, constantly alerting the ear to Beethoven’s fertile creative imagination.
