Röntgen was a fine pianist and violist in his own right and therefore composed countless works for piano and stringed instruments in the field of chamber music. The First Serenade with its light instrumentation is likely to have been inspired by Mozart’s Wind Serenades and Beethoven’s Octet. The form, melody and harmony in the Second Serenade point towards French influences.
