About

‘The name of Beethoven is a hallowed one in the realm of art. His symphonies are universally acknowledged today as masterpieces. . . . Thanks to the untold development of its harmonic power, the piano tends increasingly to assimilate the entire orchestral repertoire. In the compass of its seven octaves, it can produce, with only a few exceptions, all the characteristics, all the combinations, all the most learned compositional figures . . . Such has been my aim in the work I publish today.’ Rome, 1865

September 2012

Listening to these stunning accounts by the Russian pianist Yury Martynov, it's difficult to believe at times that only two hands are playing...Martynov never fails to play with admirable warmth and imagination. His 1937 Erard piano is an object of great beauty. Altogether, very impressive.

June 2012

Martynov's own performance here is little short of sensational, particularly in the Sixth where he tackles the phenomenal difficulty of the 'Storm' movement with a stunning virtuosity...his solutions to the substantial timbral difficulties arising from the transference of orchestra - especially Beethoven's - to piano range from the inspired to the miraculous.
