About
Cpo presents Die Stumme Serenade, one of Korngold’s lesser known musical comedies. Set in 1820 Naples it was his last stage work. The scoring for small chamber orchestra consisting of two pianos, celesta, two violins, cello, flute, clarinet/saxophone, trumpet, and assorted percussion instruments is extraordinarily appealing and attractive.
The work had a rather unsuccessful premiere in 1954 as many deemed it not in line with the musical stage works of the time. However, today we can enjoy this revival of ‘lighter Korngold’ as an enthralling, entertaining composition with an abundance of splendid melodies.

This is a wonderfully silly operetta: cross Lehar with Gilbert and Sullivan and the Marx Brothers...but it remains heartwarming and inspired nonetheless...Sarah Wegener is a pert, soulful Silvia, partnered by the warm-toned Birger Radde as Andrea, while the Holst Sinfonietta sparkles like a Viennese Christmas tree.

It's an immense pleasure to welcome this recording...The playing throughout Simon's excellent performance is crisp and stylish...The overall impression of this performance is of the greatest assurance and of sheer enjoyment: a few trifling moments aside, it's hard to imagine it being done with greater relish.
