About
Johannes Eccard of Mühlhausen is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Protestant church music. Brahms placed his works on par with those of Gabrieli and Schütz and even today his works are found in well-known collections of Protestant church music.
This new cpo recording presents a portrait of this multi-faceted composer shedding light on the contrasting genres of his output – from the marvellous five-voice Mass to popular song collection the Preussische Festlieder.

It is as if Eccard's gentle contours needed no spotlight. [The ensemble] work on the basis that the great benefit of our appreciation will come from slow and paced familiarity - which is best served by equilibrium and gravitas; not by ostentation...On the other hand the singers never underplay nor hide the strengths of this music.
