It lives up to its exalted reputation. Never can the slow movement have been played with a more desolate, more desperate intensity, or the strange scherzo have sounded more tinglingly, crazily alive...Rudolf Serkin is on brilliant form in the powerful account of the piano trio and in the posthumous, rather empty Fantasia.
