March 2012

Cantus Cölln's vastly experienced vocal ensemble has often proved that its sum is greater than its individual parts but on this occasion the solo singing is also consistently effective...Junghanel conjures an absorbing mood of essential story-telling...The product of strong musicianship, detailed thinking and and artistic integrity...Cantus Cölln's effort becomes another of my favourite examples of this approach to the St John Passion.

March 2012

Konrad Junghänel directs a fairly conventional but perceptive interpretation and he is admirably supported by his fine instrumental ensemble...bass Wolf Matthias Friedrich is outstanding. Both in his recitatives as Peter and Pontius Pilate and in his two arias with chorus...he is at once refined, dramatic and expressive. These two arias may not be the climactic moments of the drama, but they are certainly this recording's musical high points.

May 2012

Hans Jörg Mammel is a very good Evangelista, more on the light side of dramatic...but having plenty of expression and a fine sense of proportion. Markus Flaig as Jesus has a restrained authority...With sensitive and highly expressive playing from beginning to end this is a performance which commands a good deal of respect.
