The start of the first complete cycle of Dvorák symphonies on Warner Classics. It follows the enormously successful complete Glazunov symphonies cycle from José Serebrier with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and complete Glazunov concertos with the Russian National Orchestra. José Serebrier has a special affinity with Slavic music including an outstanding live performance of Rachmaninov The Bells, as well as the complete symphonies and concertos of Glazunov.

However often the Bournemouth Symphony, like every other orchestra, must have played the 'New World', there's no sense of routine in their response here: in the slow movement especially, their classy woodwind section delivers some beautifully poised moments. Serebrier's conducting, however, while free from point-making for point-making's sake, is on the earthbound side.

the high point of the performance is the finale, which Serebrier gauges virtually to perfection, tracing every episode with the utmost care and yet always relating it to a wider musical context.
