About

EM Records' third disc features Joseph Holbrooke's Second Violin Sonata (restored to its original version) and the Viola Sonata by Granville Bantock – played on Gustav Holst's viola. Luxuriously romantic, these works also display striking individuality, juxtaposing warm lyricism, wry humour and exuberant energy. They are performed by regular EMF artists Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard, whose recording of Violin Sonatas by Bliss, Walford Davies and York Bowen formed EM Records' first release and which has been greeted with glowing critical acclaim.

Awards and reviews

January 2012

This disc brings together two neglected composers closely related by their friendship...Whether on violin or viola, Marshall-Luck plays with ideal purity over the widest range, important in both works when high harmonics are involved. Matthew Rickard's piano-playing is also impressive, notably in the flamboyant writing in the Bantock.

these two works seem to be an excellent pairing for this CD, especially in such fine performances and recordings as these, Marshall-Luck as excellent an exponent of the viola as he is of the violin. This is a very interesting and eminently worthwhile project, admirably accomplished in every regard.

Marshall-Luck plays Gustav Holst’s viola in the Bantock and proves a good ambassador for both works, violin and viola, and has clearly spent much time preparing for the undertaking. The recording is good, marginally too close to the viola over the piano, but not damagingly so. It’s fine news that these two pretty much ignored works have been given some careful attention.
