About
This recording marks the beginning of a new series devoted to previously unrecorded chamber works by the Danish composer Vagn Holmboe. The music was written from the 1950s to the 1980s and ranges wide, all the way from the playful to the serious. Holmboe’s inexhaustible wealth of ideas and his mixture of lightness and ingenuity run through all the works. As does his ‘metamorphosis’ technique, which makes the music breathe and grow like the Nordic landscape of which Holmboe felt himself to be a part.

As with all Holmboe's music, there are rewards in store for anyone who delights in following lines of pure musical thought. Nothing is gratuitous or extraneous; nor can the musical character ever be completely taken for granted...musical conversation is Holmboe's strong point, as it is for the excellent players on this cleanly recorded disc.

Despite this music’s strong visceral undertow, it appeals at least as much to the intellect: it is highly crafted and, at first exposure, emotionally cool – yet also driven by the kind of passion often associated with Shostakovich.
