Following on from the songs (1C1030) and chamber music (1C1167), comes a release of undoubtedly some of the finest orchestral works of Maurice Emmanuel. Besides the fine symphonies the disc also brings two world premiere recordings to the ears of the listener - Overture for a merry tale & Suite Française. The Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra is superbly led by conductor Emmanuel Villaume, on board for his first symphonic disc, and doubtless not his last.

There is no hint in these works of the sway that, say, Cesar Franck had over French music during the 19th century, nor any noticeable nod to the prominence of Debussy in the early 20th...the Overture to a Merry Tale exudes a vivacious and perkily irreverant spirit...All in all, the disc identifies a fascinatingly independent creative spirit.
