About

It is a June day in London in 1923, and the lovely Clarissa Dalloway is having a party. Whom will she see? Her friend Peter, back from India, who has never really stopped loving her? What about Sally, with whom Clarissa had her life’s happiest moment? Meanwhile, the shell-shocked Septimus Smith is struggling with his life on the same London day. Luminously beautiful, Mrs Dalloway uses the internal monologues of the characters to tell a story of inter-war England.

She had reached the Park gates.

Not a straw, she thought, going on up Bond Street…

The crush was terrific for the time of day.

Suddenly Mrs. Coates looked up into the sky.

'Septimus!' said Rezia.

The way to Regent's Park Tube station…
Track length6:59
'What are they looking at?' said Clarissa Dalloway…

Like a nun withdrawing, or a child exploring…
Track length6:27
Sally's power was amazing…
Track length5:36
Yet, how much she owed to Peter Walsh…
Track length7:11
Quiet descended on her, calm, content…
Track length6:31
Then, just as happens on a terrace in the moonlight…
Track length6:41
'And who is she?' she asked.
Track length6:43
Remember my party, remember my party…
Track length5:54
A patter like the patter of leaves in a wood…
Track length6:21
But other people got between them in the street…
Track length7:10
The grey nurse resumed her knitting…
Track length4:09
So the elderly nurse knitted…
Track length7:02
Afterwards he could remember standing…
Track length6:57
It was awful, he cried, awful, awful!
Track length7:10
Heaven was divinely merciful…
Track length6:36
And that is being young, Peter Walsh thought…
Track length6:55
He had married this lady, the Honourable Evelyn…
Track length7:33
Oddly enough, she was one of the most…
Track length6:46
A sound interrupted him; a frail quivering…
Track length7:23
As for the other experiences…
Track length7:29
'Beautiful!' she would murmur…
Track length6:41
Nothing could rouse him.
Track length7:26
It was precisely twelve o'clock…
Track length6:51
So they returned him to the most exalted of mankind…
Track length5:51
But Proportion has a sister…
Track length8:42
Lady Bruton herself preferred Richard Dalloway…
Track length7:06
Milly Brush once might almost have fallen in love…
Track length7:30
And Millicent Bruton was very proud of her family.
Track length6:51
'I should like to see Mr. Dubonnet,' said Hugh…
Track length6:33
As for Buckingham Palace…
Track length6:48
How like him! He would go on saying…
Track length6:46
She stood quite still and looked at her mother…
Track length6:54
With a sudden impulse, with a violent anguish…
Track length6:38
How nice it must be, she said…
Track length6:39
'I never go to parties,' said Miss Kilman…
Track length7:42
Suddenly Elizabeth stepped forward…
Track length6:05
It was not conscious.
Track length6:28
Her sigh was tender and enchanting…
Track length5:38
So she sewed.
Track length6:44
She held her hands to her head…
Track length5:56
'The coward!' cried Dr. Holmes…
Track length6:13
Clarissa once, going on top of an omnibus…
Track length7:03
To get that letter to him by six o'clock…
Track length6:43
He never knew what people thought.
Track length7:21
For the great revolution…
Track length7:09
Lucy came running full tilt downstairs…
Track length5:33
Oh dear, it was going to be a failure…
Track length6:47
And yet, for her own part…
Track length7:18
And now Clarissa escorted her Prime Minister…
Track length6:51
'But the noise!' she said. 'The noise!'
Track length6:49
Lady Bruton stood by Miss Parry's chair…
Track length7:36
Sinking her voice…
Track length7:39
'But where is Clarissa?' said Peter.
Track length5:44
Hugh Whitbread it was, strolling past…
Track length6:38
'No, no, no!' said Peter…

SoundCommentary

If Claire [sic] Dalloway, herself, were to speak these words, they would sound no different. The tension, worry, and desires of the characters’ thoughts are magnified by Stevenson’s intonation. It is a truly pleasurable, outstanding listening experience.
