About

A land-surveyor, known only as K., arrives at a small village permanently covered in snow and dominated by a castle to which access seems permanently denied. K.’s attempts to discover why he has been called constantly run up against the peasant villagers, who are in thrall to the absurd bureaucracy that keeps the castle shut, and the rigid hierarchy of power among the self-serving bureaucrats themselves. But in this strange wilderness, there is passion, tenderness and considerable humour. Darkly bizarre, this complex book was the last novel by one of the 20th century’s greatest and most influential writers.

Frieda looked up, her eyes full of tears…

'It's absolutely true,' said the landlady…
Track length6:05
'You see,' the landlady exclaimed…
Track length6:13

In his innermost being…
Track length6:42
'The assistants bother you then,' said the mayor…
Track length5:44
'A long correspondence now ensued…'
Track length5:50
'You always describe my case as being…'
Track length6:51
'I'm only suggesting this as a possibility…'
Track length6:41
'Fair enough,' said K.
Track length7:30
Chapter 6
Track length5:23
She drew a photograph out from under the pillow…
Track length5:31
The landlady found K.'s attempt…
Track length5:53

Track length4:53
Chapter 13
Track length5:23
Even K., though, no longer had the determination…
Track length5:21
'Certainly, envoys from Klamm,' said Frieda.
Track length5:39
After a bit they heard a slight knocking.
Track length6:36
In the end K. grew tired…
Track length6:18
K., wanting to put this idea to the test…
Track length6:09
It was some time since K. had called Hans…
Track length6:20
It was none too soon for Hans to have gone…
Track length6:06
And at this point she told K.…
Track length4:46
'You envisage the discussion with Klamm…'
Track length4:45
'Then, though, suddenly, I don't know how it happened…'
Track length4:48
'The key point, Frieda,' said K.…
Track length6:02
Chapter 14

The only surprising thing…
Track length6:19
If Olga had been here, she would have replied…
Track length5:22
K., who was slightly annoyed by this…
Track length4:42
Chapter 15
Track length5:22
'That's a good observation,' said K.…
Track length6:54
'We do talk about Klamm sometimes…'
Track length6:15
'Barnabas has enough time to observe all of this…'
Track length6:31
'Everything you say to him is right too, though,' said K.…
Track length7:12
'What's more, I've still been basing all these comments…'
Track length6:24
'Judge for yourself,' said Olga…
Track length5:31
'Three years have had that effect on him?' asked K.…
Track length6:43
'And what was in the letter?' asked K.…
Track length7:24
'No, Olga,' said K. 'I don't know why…'
Track length6:40
'Maybe,' said K., 'but for me the main difference…'
Track length6:43
'You're so scared,' said K.
Track length7:09
'Finally he did begin to speak…'
Track length7:09
'I don't want to talk about Sortini,' said Olga.
Track length3:59
'And at this point, as I've already said…'
Track length4:20
'And what use were these ideas, anyway…'
Track length7:19
Father kept at it. He was still very strong…
Track length7:00
'Just think how far things must have gone with father…'
Track length7:33
'It was now a question of finding father…'
Track length5:36
Every day we expect her life to end…
Track length7:13
'I saw there was a chance like that for Barnabas…'
Track length6:40
'However fruitless this whole period was…'
Track length6:19
'If I have spoken disparagingly…'
Track length7:54
Chapter 16
Track length4:50
'You're still looking for me as if you were an employee…'
Track length6:28
'These threats don't frighten me,' said Jeremias.
Track length5:28
Chapter 17
Track length5:33
At this point the front door opened…
Track length6:05
Chapter 18
Track length6:49
'We won't talk about that any more,' said K.…
Track length7:00
'That's all sorted out, then,' K. continued.
Track length6:57
'Come to your senses; pull yourself together…'
Track length7:51
Now he felt he at least had the strength to face Erlanger.
Track length4:23
'Where are you intending to go now, then?' asked Burgel.
Track length5:54
'You seem to have had some disappointments…'
Track length5:36
'Even they are not really aware of these negative effects…'
Track length6:25
'However, there is…' said Burgel, looking up pensively…
Track length6:50
'That's the position. And now, sir, consider…'
Track length4:52
'And yet we're happy! How suicidal happiness can be!…'
Track length5:43
Chapter 19
Track length5:08
And the fact that now, at five o'clock…
Track length4:26
Only then did the real difficulties begin.
Track length6:41
And if that did not work…
Track length5:54
Was the gentleman wanting to call for service…
Track length6:42
Did he not watch as the files were being distributed?
Track length4:28
While all this was being put to K.…
Track length6:10
Chapter 20
Track length5:34
And at the time Pepi had even had thoughts…
Track length5:45
'But that's not the worst thing.'
Track length6:10
'However, he didn't correct it…'
Track length6:08
'He was nothing at all; it was depressing to contemplate…'
Track length5:25
Of course, it was not difficult…
Track length6:26
And then there was the misfortune…
Track length6:22
K. was totally unaware of what Frieda was doing.
Track length5:54
'What a wild imagination you have, Pepi,' said K.
Track length5:38
'One certainly can't lay that charge at Klamm's door…'
Track length7:04
'They probably won't be at all surprised…'
Track length7:09
It was a small, overheated room.
