This really is a disc to lay the ghost that Reger is such a dull composer. These Sonatas are massive works. The 4th composed in 1904 and the 9th (his final in this series) dating from 1915. Johannes Prelle navigates their complexities brilliantly along with his pianist, Thomas Gunther. Far from pursuing the obvious course in these two works, Reger goes his own way and it is quite a journey.
