What has been released is actually an amalgamation of two session exactly a decade apart...[Kallisch] evinces real finesse in the fourth, with its evocations of beauty and enchantment...Yet this is ultimately Gielen's 'performance', and those familiar with his Mahler will encounter the expected combination of formal precision and expressive spontaneity here.
