About

Following on from CPO’s successful ongoing series of Weinberg’s Violin Sonatas and Works for Violin and Piano, is a disc of the Russian composer’s Piano Works. The first Piano Sonata, written when Weinberg was only twenty, is a work of emotional depth and musical maturity. Depth, seriousness, drama and technical demands differentiate Children’s Notebooks from other similarly titled exercises for children from the likes of Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Khachaturian. Nevertheless the textures are lighter than typical Weinberg and the music is extremely approachable.

These complex pieces are interpreted by the Russian pianist Elisaveta Blumina.

Children’s Notebooks are more than exercise pieces: demanding and dramatic, they sound like distant cousins of Bartók’s folksong pieces, albeit with darker motifs and unsettling scales. The Sonata, written at the age of 20, is a work of quirky individuality, alternately threatening and clownish. Blumina makes powerful sense of it.

Elisaveta Blumina's achievementis to provoke a re-evaluation of this corner of the Weinberg repertoire. Where previously one might have suspected the 21-year-old composer's debut sonata of a degree of formal and textural miscalculation, Blumina's superior clarity and agility reveal it as a bold and uncompromising statement...She crafts each piece with care and insight.
