Jochum's conducting of this work is utterly involving, his feeling for long-term musical direction palpable from the first moments of the great opening chorus. This is big-band, big-choir Bach, but when it has as strong a sense of the spiritual as this performance the results are emotionally involving and moving. Pears and Hotter are both noble and eloquent
