About
Heir to the great tradition of the Viennese Philharmonic, where he was concertmeister in his youth, Walter Weller knows his Brahms. The Variations on a theme by Haydn have seldom sounded so natural and fluid. They open this programme, consisting of the two first orchestral scores written by the Hamburg master. After a stunning Burlesque by Richard Strauss, Walter Weller meets again with Plamena Mangova in a powerful 1st Concerto.

[a] serious and musicianly approach to Brahms's epic elegy, always suggesting the trauma Brahms suffered after the attempted suicide of his beloved Schumann. Everything unfolds with naturalness and dignity...Her poise and restraint in the central Adagio are unfaltering and, more generally, nothing tempts her into excess.
