Matthias Goerne's 1996 Hyperion Winterreise with Graham Johnson is one of the most thoughtful and scrupulously sung in the catalogue. This new disc, which comes from performances in London's Wigmore Hall, probes altogether more deeply into the cycle's psychopathology. Goerne's velvet, rounded baritone has now acquired new colours and a firmer, richer bass resonance. And abetted by Brendel's lucid, wonderfully coloured playing, he ventures an even freer, more daring range of expression.
