Kubelik has [the work's] measure...James King is strong as Mathis's patron, the liberal Cardinal Albrecht...the plum of the set is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's deeply-felt performance of the title role, which is unlikely to be bettered.
This is a very fine version of one of the pinnacles of 20th-century German opera … Kubelík’s devilish-sounding Bavarians in the famous “Temptation of St Antony” scene are excellent … All those who, like me, love this score will want this recording

This is an opera with so many moments of luminous beauty, and this recording is the finest (and most complete) performance committed to disc...there is real nobility in [Kubelik's] conception, but it's urgently theatrical too...Then there's the casting: this would certainly be at or near the top of any list of Fischer-Dieskau's greatest opera recordings
