Hickox and his orchestra bring out the genius of the scoring, melody and harmony, at once so spare and so lush and, literally, so magical.
2010 edition
With a chamber orchestra rather than the full LSO, the scale is more intimate...What makes the set indispensable is that it includes a brief 90-second sequence, intensely poetic, in the scene of the lovers' awakening in Act III, where Britten's own recording observes a cut as made in the original Aldeburgh staging.
