Rapsodia satanica is the soundtrack music of a 1914 movie, a “cinematographic-musical poem”. The lush score is more rhapsodic than satanical, and is laid out and expanded by the rich orchestral writing, limpid and smooth rather than impetuous and flashy. The occasional sonorous outbursts or sudden melancholy retards balance the ingenuously varied structure, which ranges “from the echoes of Wagner and Debussy to folk-like effects to citations from Chopin”.
