About

While the fifth and the ninth quartet quite audibly sound like Shostakovich, Weinberg’s fourteenth string quartet seems to set out on a new creative journey. Its five movements continue without a break, but each of them has a completely different thematic character.

February 2011

in the first movement [of the Ninth] Weinberg eschews lyricism and projects an almost relentless density of sound...[the 14th] is dominated by long impassioned monologues for solo instruments and by a seeming inability to achieve resolution between passages of violence and those of a more consoling nature...committed playing makes this release worthwhile.
