About
Franco Leoni was born in Milan in 1864 and in 1892 moved to London, where he achieved some popularity as a song and opera composer. This opera, based on the drama “The cat and the Cherub” by Chester Bailey Fernald was premiered at Covent Garden in 1905. The work became a repertoire staple at the Metropolitan Opera in the twenties and thirties but then disappeared almost completely.

Leoni's orchestral score is clearly the work of a minor master, a composer who knew and learned from his contemporaries Debussy, Puccini and Strauss...Certainly, for anyone new to the piece, this is a dramatically and musically compelling account of Leoni's score...Both singers [Ventre and Raspagliosi] have this music in their blood and sing it lustily.
