About

This CD marks the beginning of a major project called ‘A Different Bruckner’ for Cpo and Mario Venzago as they set out to record the complete Symphonies of Anton Bruckner. Venzago’s approach is to prove that every one of Bruckner’s nine symphonies has its unique message for which the composer always created new musical principles and a constantly changing sound picture. In doing so he is assigning each symphony a specific orchestra of very different size, culture, and tradition. The Basel Symphony Orchestra begins the series with Symphonies Nos. 4 and 7.

Swiss-born Venzago is the Principal Conductor of the Northern Sinfonia and is also conductor laureate of the Basel Symphony Orchestra.

Awards and reviews

November 2011

This installment of a projected complete Bruckner cycle for CPO is interesting in that it displays a markedly individual approach to the music, one where luminous textures and extreme tempo fluctuations are conspicious by their frequency...these particular performances exhibit a thorough understanding of Bruckner and would certainly spur you on to further listening were you to encounter them before any others.
