About
Schumann’s choral works are rarely performed and recorded. This fairy folk-tale was written in 1851 and is in the form of an oratorio where the soloists are more integrated into the fabric of the work. On this recording the singing is excellent throughout and Michael Gee’s fortepiano accompaniment enhances the performance.

As the narrator, Christoph Prégardien (whose son Julian makes his mark in the small part of Max) finely balances simplicity and a Lieder singer's subtlety of inflection. Anna Lucia Richter exudes virginal innocence as the Rose, an the other solos are decently taken by members of the tightly knit chorus.
