About

Boris Christoff was fortunate that from the outset of his international career, which coincided with the emergence of a number of fine basses, he was favourably compared with that outstanding Russian artist Feodor Chaliapin, certainly one of the operatic icons of the 20th Century. Some commentators and certain older members of the opera-going public, and in particular collectors of recorded vocal-art, thought that this might be too heavy a burden for a young singer to bear. However, his talent and career substantiated the initial impact he made on the contemporary operatic scene, and he was to become one of the most universally admired operatic artists of his generation.
