About
The rich tone of the cello is ideally suited to music that evokes feelings of love and romance, but it is also the voice of melancholy and longing. Both aspects of the cello are well represented in this collection of popular works, ranging from great masterpieces by Bach, Vivaldi and Haydn, through romantic cello works by Schumann, Dvorák and Saint-Saëns to Elgar’s greatly loved Cello Concerto in E minor. The cello’s lighter side is not neglected in Popper’s sprightly ‘Dance of the Elves’ and Elgar’s charming ‘Chanson de matin’. Cellists include Gautier Capuçon, Han-Na Chang, Natalie Clein, Steven Isserlis, Truls Mørk, Jacqueline du Pré, Mstislav Rostropovich and Julian Lloyd Webber
