The piano version does differ from the orchestral version in many respects. It is quite a challenge to do justice to the symphonic dimension of the work, but the piano is well able to reflect the textural alternation between the exhilarated orchestral “drunkenness” of the songs for tenor and the more tranquil, fragile songs for lower voice.
