The two cantatas BWV 146 and 43 were composed for Jubilate Sunday and for Ascension Day respectively, both of them joyous occasions celebrating Christ’s resurrection and subsequent ascension into heaven.

Its text, of 'tears sown with anxious heart', is accompanied by the haunting mix of flute and two oboes d'amore. Rachel Nicholls sings the aria with sublime simplicity...

Peter Kooij is at his very best in the deceptively hard and highly melismatic opening aria of No 88. This requires exceptional stamina, as the bass graphically tells of the miracle of the fisherman Simon, in a performance of commanding presence. It is matched also in the exquisitely refined chamber-like exchanges of the soprano and alto duo of Rachel Nicholls and Robin Blaze...
