About

Tosca is one of Puccini’s most popular operas and a tremendous vehicle for great singing actors offering endless dramatic possibilities for the three central characters. The central role of Tosca dominates the opera and is a role Leontyne Price, with her extraordinary vocal and acting skills has excelled in. Partnering Tosca as her lover Cavaradossi is PlÁcido Domingo, while Sherrill Milnes gives a powerful performance as the evil Baron Scarpia.

Awards and reviews

October 2009

Leontyne Price's… 'Vissi d'arte' is artistry incarnate… Domingo sounds young and ardent as Cavaradossi, and Milnes's villain is the most complete I've ever heard, projecting the meaning of every line with the full range of vocal colour. Zubin Mehta's brazen approach is matched by an audio spectacular.

July 2014

I simply had to choose Leontyne Price in the role of Tosca; the emotion in her voice at the end of Vissi d'arte is just heartbreaking. Plácido Domingo is at his expressive best as Cavaradossi, bringing a tear to the eye in his Act Three aria, E lucevan le stelle. With Sherrill Milnes as a truly menacing Scarpia, this is an ideal cast, all marshalled superbly by Zubin Mehta conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra.
