…the Variations orchestrales sur une oeuvre de Janácek… is based on the fourth movement of the Czech composer's piano suite In the Mists… Dalbavie's own music is dominated by shimmering, sustained sonorities - including electronically manipulated sounds - and the occasional outburst, and might remind some listeners of a latter-day Tapiola. ...his Sinfonietta... full of gathering fanfares, and the short and distinctive scherzo gets a virtuosic performance from the Monte-Carlo orchestra.

The Monte Carlo orchestra, under the composer’s expert hands, provides all the timbral and textural dexterity that the music requires, and Ameson has captured them vividly. There are informative notes too. A stellar release.

Here are three fine works which would be attractive in any orchestra's programme...the ebb and flow of "The Rocks Under the Water" is most alluring.
