Rudolph Simonsen belonged to the Danish generation succeeding Carl Nielsen, at a time when the Danish musical scene was flourishing.
Simonsen felt strong ties to Jewish history and assigned the programmatic title ‘Zion’ to his first symphony, which was premiered by Carl Nielsen in Göteborg in 1920.
