Clemens Gadenstätter is by no means a convenient composer, he neither goes in for standard ‘wash-and-wear’ modernism, merrily putting assorted overused phrases of Schönberg vintage through a gentle fabric-conditioning cycle. His unique style of composition brings into play a method of re-synthesization and re-coding of musical form. He first used this technique to critical acclaim in his ensemble piece schniTt, which focuses on the building up and dying down of tones. This new recording moves his compositional landscapes further forward and will been keenly sought out by followers of Contemporary music and will no doubt convert many others along the way. Out of interest he was also a pupil of Helmut Lachenmann who features on the other Col Legno February release.
