[Lachenmann] elicits from his performers the sort of rebarbative, accidental noises they are conventionally trained to avoid, and builds on these an abstruse new aesthetic. There is genuine vitality in this seemingly bleak and philosophical (Adorno-inspired) approach, as the half-hour allegro sostenuto, for clarinet/bass clarinet, cello and piano, demonstrates.
