It was in March 1838 that Sigismund Neukomm [1778-1858], disciple of Haydn, composed this requiem mass, a grandiose funeral ceremonial combining the dark sonorities of male voices with a brass ensemble and, for the final procession, a tam-tam. The result is both gripping and deeply moving, and the presence of a choir from the Indian Ocean, gives this genuine discovery a powerful note of authenticity.
