In Saul, the thrilling playing of Concerto Köln is displayed in immaculate sound and the RIAS Kammerchor is sufficiently weighty to make the lengthy opening Song of Triumph a glorious episode. In the more abstract delights of Messiah… Jacobs's pacy yet eloquent direction makes the most familiar numbers sound freshly minted.
Avoiding the tics that betray most non-English performers, Jacobs and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra give us an up-to-the minute Messiah - a model of period-instrument style, with ravishing ornaments, intelligent
accents and crystal-clear diction from the mixed-voice Choir of Clare College, Cambridge. An ideal Christmas stocking-filler.
A wonderful achievement, bursting with youthful energy.
