Henryk Szeryng, one of the greatest violinists of all time, was born in Warsaw on September 22, 1918. He was a pupil of Carl Flesch and Jacques Thibaud. Szeryng graduated from the Paris Conservatory with a Premier Prix d'Interpretation. A prolific recording artist, Szeryng recording of Bach's 6 sonatas and partitas made in 1955 is considered to this day, as one of the finest ever made. He was later signed by RCA and by Philips generating numerous solo concerto recordings of the standard repertoire, with such conductors as Antal Dorati, Rafael Kubelik, Pierre Monteux and Bernard Haitink. Among his most notable recording projects with Philips were the Mozart violin concertos (with PhO under Gibson) and Mozart's violin and piano sonatas (with Haebler). Later recordings by DG included his second landmark recording of the 6 Bach's sonatas and partitas and featured him in chamber music with Wilhelm Kempff and Pierre Fournier in a comprehensive project that covered the trios of Brahms, Schumann, and Beethoven. His vast discography contains several recordings each of the great concertos by Brahms, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky and the first recording of the newly discovered Paganini's Concerto No. 3 and numerous recordings of Kreisler, Wieniawski and Sarasate showpieces. His untimely death in Kassel, Germany in March 3, 1988, robbed the music world of one of the leading representatives of the ''golden age'' of violin playing.
