The great conductor Erich Kleiber (1890-1956) had a unique affinity with the music of Mozart and Beethoven, and particularly with Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony (the Eroica). Kleiber's formidable recording with the Amsterdam Concergebouw is a testimony to this. Kleiber felt he had a special responsibility to interpret this particular work in the finest way possible. Perhaps this is the reason why he prevented the release of his marvellous recording with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (which was issued only after his death). In 1923 Kleiber became the general music director of the Berlin State Opera. While in this post, he also toured with both the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic orchestras. In 1934 Kleiber, unable to tolerate the Nazi regime’s interference with the arts, resigned his position in Berlin and left Germany. He subsequently toured mostly in Central and South America, and took up residence in Buenos Aires. He returned to (East) Berlin in 1951 as the conductor of the State Opera, (1951 to 1955) at which time, and in the last year of his life, he was active in some of Europe’s other major musical centres, particularly in Vienna, London, Cologne and Stuttgart. The Eroica Symphony offered here comes from a live concert with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra given on New Year’s Eve one month before Kleiber’s death. It shows again the heights of Kleiber’s interpretation of the work. Beethoven’s Coriolan and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, both with the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra, are among Kleiber’s earliest recordings (c. 1930-34) for Telefunken.
