Jacques Thibaud, born in Bordeaux on September 27, 1880, was undoubtedly the most celebrated French violinist of the first half of the twentieth century. The word best describing Thibaud's artistry is charm. His success was a result of not just his musical performance but of his charisma, grace, warmth and elegance. He was admired for his fascinating, personal, sensual, sweet and seductive tone. His trio collaboration with Cortot and Casals was one of the most successful chamber music groups in the history of classical music. Even as late as 1950, when high level of technical perfection was achieved by the likes of Heifetz, Milstein and Francescatti, Thibaud's playing style was still characterized as old-fashioned, common to the turn of the century. However, he maintained his appeal with the sensuous tone and the personal, heart-felt singing quality for which he was so admired. Jacques Thibaud died tragically in a plane crash on September 1, 1953. This DOREMI release includes, for the very first time, the historic concert of December 13, 1951, when Thibaud presented concertos Nos. 3 , 4, & 5 in the same evening, with Georges Enesco conducting.
