This DVD of a distinguished account of Verdi's grand opera from 1994 has a great deal to recommend it, yet in the end I'm not sure that it manages to avoid cliché of the sense that the work has gone slightly stale, for all its fine moments.
[Sir Edward Downes’] command of the score's structure, its curious blend of delicacy and bombast, of classical propriety and romantic excess, is complete and he drew superbly disciplined playing from the pit and lusty singing from the augmented chorus.
