About
Inventions is a long standing disc in our catalogue of titles from UK based Czech label Cube Bohemia. It pre-dates our CD of the Month, and is highlighted now as it is simply one of the most original harpsichord recordings to come our way.
Bach's Inventions, (BWV 722-786), date from his years working for Prince Leopold Anhalt-Cothen. A period when Bach devoted his time to secular music. Czech harpsichordist, Monika Knoblochova, pairs these with Inventions by Jan Novak (1921-1984).
Novak composed his Inventions in 1980, and like Bach's each spans two pages, each piece in two voices. Making a fully rounded programme, the disc also features Bach's Sonata in D minor, BWV 964, and Novak's Sonata Brevis.

…Monika Knoblochová's ebullient, energetic performances don’t wear out their welcome. She's fully attuned to Novák's zany harmonic ideas and revels in the composer's "wrong rhythm ragtime" in the 12th Invention and his brash Sonata brevis's central Andante. Her Bach-playing not only gives you the notes but also the air that connects them.
