About

Who was the young Bach? A rebellious, provocative adolescent? A clever, stubborn careerist? An innovator, as gifted as he was prolific? Certainly a mixture of all three, replies the harpsichordist Andreas Staier in this selection of early works that are anything but run-of-the-mill.This programme shows how Bach, eager to call the music of his time into question, assimilated multiple influences and gave a 'new look' to the traditions of north Germany.

Awards and reviews

May 2008

Hard to know which star shines brightest here: Andreas Staier's or that of the instrument, a copy of a 1734 Hass.

June 2008

Harpsichord-playing over the past few decades has been dominated by a sonic purism which has frowned on "excessive" register changes but if you can surrender yourself to Staier's mastery of them the excitement is hair-raising.

The Independent on Sunday

the works in Andreas Staier's captivating recital reveal the developing musical personality of the young Bach. Staier's performance is suffused with a greedy pleasure in the warmth and variety of Anthony Sidey and Frédéric
Bal's copy of a 1734 Hass double-manual harpsichord.
