The Second Quartet, Op 70, No 2, first performed in 1816, still inhabits the classical world of Haydn, although there’s a certain Beethoven-like solidness about it, too. The searching Quartet in F minor, WoO 48, composed in 1833-35, reflects the spirit of middle-period rather than late-period Beethoven. Excellent performances by the Schuppanzigh-Quartett, though the liner notes are turgidly analytical.
