Rolfe Johnson brings out the inward intensity of Grimes, singing most beautifully, hardly troubled by the high tessitura. Felicity Lott makes a tenderly sympathetic Ellen Orford, and Sarah Walker is unforgettable as Mrs Sedley...Thomas Allen is a wise and powerful Balstrode
