About

Premiere recording of Heiner Goebbels’ opera, Landscape with Distant Relatives, this “viscerally and intellectually exciting” work featuring actor-speaker David Bennent, baritone Georg Nigl, 16 further singers and Ensemble Modern is the German composer’s 8th for ECM. The “consistently gripping score” ranges in style from early/Renaissance to “teeth-baring aggression”, and incorporates pounding drums, a Hindi chant by A R Rahman, a temple flautist and 'about 10%' improvisation.

Awards and reviews

April 2008

That music is a stylistic patchwork… with reference to Bollywood film scores and country and western punctuated by snatches of jazzy improvisation… and medieval pastiche. It shouldn't work at all, yet Goebbels's alchemy makes it all hang together in a totally convincing and haunting way. It's a tour de force for Ensemble Modern too.

It's a seductive, sometimes shocking and viscerally exciting musical experience...This is a recording taken from live performances in France in October 2004. The photos in the notes give an idea of the impact Goebbel's opera has on stage, but the images seem to sear the mind, even off CD. A stunning achievement, and a haunting experience.

a thought-provoking, hauntingly tender work for troubled times
